Film Night @ The Hilt - Four Mothers - 9th January 2026
Four Mothers
Directed by Darren Thornton and co-written with his brother Colin, Four Mothers (2025) is a heartwarming Irish comedy-drama that reimagines the 2008 Italian hit Mid-August Lunch through a modern, queer lens. Set in Dublin, the story follows Edward (James McArdle), a novelist on the brink of success who is the primary caregiver for his mother, Alma (Fionnula Flanagan), who is recovering from a stroke. The plot kicks into gear when Edward's friends unexpectedly leave their three aging mothers in his care while they jet off to a Pride festival, leading to a chaotic but touching weekend of shared history and self-discovery.
Critics have largely praised the film for its "razor-laced wit" and its refusal to infantilize its elderly characters. While some reviewers found the premise slightly thin or the pacing uneven, the performances—particularly the "emotive" and "nuanced" lead by McArdle and Flanagan’s silent but expressive portrayal—are widely cited as the film's strongest assets.

Film Night @ The Hilt - I Swear - 3rd April 2026
The true life story of John Davidson.
Diagnosed with Tourette’s at 15, targeted as insane by his peers, he struggled with a condition few had witnessed. Campaigning for Tourette’s as an adult, he was awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2019.
“A terrifically warm, generous film.” The Guardian
“It is a drama with three-dimensional people, facing three-dimensional problems
and dealing with them... I absolutely loved it.” Mark Kermode

“There’s a hint of repetition in the mid-section and a schmaltzy third act
courtroom scene. But all flaws are overcome by Aramayo’s technically precise
and heart-rending turn. It’s astonishing.” The Times

“Just lovely. Tourette syndrome has not been afforded its cinematic dues, but
what an affable, funny character to explore it with in John Davidson -- and what
a performance from Robert Aramayo.” Empire

Film Night @ The Hilt - The Roses - 28th February 2026
The Roses
Directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, The Roses (2025) is a polarising satirical black comedy that updates Warren Adler’s novel for a modern audience. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as Theo and Ivy Rose, the film reimagines the 1989 classic The War of the Roses as a slow-burn dissection of a marriage in decay, triggered when Theo’s architectural career fails while Ivy’s success as a chef begins to soar.
Critics widely praise the "electric" chemistry and witty "acerbic" dialogue delivered by the leads. However, the film has faced criticism for tonal inconsistencies, with some reviewers finding it "toothless" or "too cruel" compared to the original. While the supporting cast—including Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Allison Janney—provides comedic energy, some critics found their presence distracting or poorly utilised.

Film Night @ The Hilt - Ocean - 9th May 2026
Join us for a celebration of Sir David Attenborough's 100th Birthday (May 8th 2026). A true national treasure who has touched all out lives over his incredible career presents an inspiring documentary that shows just how incredibly resilient our plant is!
David Attenborough explores the planet's undersea habitats, revealing the greatest age of ocean discovery and emphasizing the ocean's vital importance while exposing its problems and highlighting opportunities for marine life recovery.
“A visual marvel like all his work, governed by his own matchless authority and striking a steady tonal balance between warning and hope, David Attenborough’s new film about the oceans is absorbing and compelling.” The Guardian
“So while this is environmental film-making at its most powerful — at times, it comes at you like a sledgehammer blow — crucially, it finds cause for optimism. Warmth again prevails. And by then the film has done its job: a warning against complacency.” The Times
“Endlessly compelling and captivating, . . unfolding over little more than 90 minutes, it’s by turns awe-inspiring, informative, deeply angering and cautiously hopeful.” Radio Times
